How to test 304 Stainless Steel?

Testing is an important parameter in metallurgical sciences. The performance and properties of grade 304 can be assessed with the various testing procedure. The qualitative and quantitative tests can be performed to test grade 304. Few tests are potable and some of the tests require laboratory confirmations. A laboratory test can determine the hardness, tensile strength, etc.

Chemical test

  • Nitric acid reaction can be done to distinguish grade 304 from non-stainless steel elements. Grade 304 will not affect by nitric acid whereas non-stainless steel material will show brown fumigation.
  • A Moly-drop test can be performed to test the difference between 304/304L and 316/316L.
  • MANGANESE test can be done to differentiate grade 304 from 200 series.
  • Sulfur spot test can help in the identification of grades 304 from 303. Grade 304 has lesser sulfur content than grade 303.

Instrumental test

Instrumental tests are expensive.

  • Spark spectroscopy

An electrical spark is generated and the concentration of elements is depicted by the intensity of specific colors.

  • X-ray fluorescence

This test allows for the identification of chemical composition. 304 Stainless steel has the main composition of chromium, nickel, and other alloying agents.
