Martensitic Stainless Steels

AMBICA STEELS PRODUCED VARIOUS STAINLESS STEEL PRODUCTS OF DIFFERENT GRADES, MARTENSITIC STAINLESS STEEL IS ONE OF THEM.

Martensitic stainless steels are also classified in the 400 series. The main alloying element is chromium, with a typical content of 10.5-18%, but a relatively high carbon content than the ferritics i.e( 0.15-1.2 )%

Due to the addition of carbon, they can be hardened and strengthened by heat treatment. They are classified as a “hard” ferromagnetic group. Martensitic grades are magnetic in both the annealed and hardened condition.

Like ferrite stainless steel, they also have a body-centered cubic crystal structure in the hardened condition. The carbon content of these hardenable steels affects forming and welding. The weldable martensitics usually require preheating and postweld heat treatment to prevent cracking and obtain desired characteristics.

We are producing various martensitic grades made for a variety of product requirements and applications.

The commonly produced grades are 410,416,420,430F, 431 etc.

PROPERTIES

Corrosion Resistance

Martensitic grades generally exhibits moderate corrosion resistance due to high carbon content.

Weldability

It offers very limited weldability due to its hardenability.Special consideration may be required to prevent cracking by preheating and post weld heat treatment to achieve desired characteristics/properties.

Formability

Martensitic grades are moderately cold formed due to high carbon content. The strength obtained by heat treatment depends on the carbon content of the steels. Increasing the carbon content increases the strength and hardness potential but decreases ductility and toughness.

APPLICATIONS OF MARTENSITIC STAINLESS STEELS

Martensitic stainless steels are used where the application requires good tensile strength, creep, and fatigue strength properties.Due to their high strength in combination with some corrosion resistance, martensitic steels are suitable for applications where the material is subjected to both corrosion and wear.

Martensitic steels with high carbon content are often used for tool steels, cutlery, fasteners, dies, surgical and dental instruments. They are also used in petrochemical industry for gas and steam turbine blades.
