Introduction
Stainless steel bars come in several finished states depending on the dimensional accuracy and surface quality a fabrication requires. Manufacturers deliver round, square, hexagonal and flat sections either hot rolled or cold finished, and this choice directly affects tolerance, straightness and downstream machining cost. Within the flat bar category, stainless steel cold drawn flat bars occupy the precision end of the range. Instead of shaping the bar purely by rolling it at high temperature, mills pull cold drawn flat bars through a sizing die at room temperature, which tightens tolerances, improves surface finish and increases strength through work hardening.
This makes them the preferred choice wherever a flat section has to hold a close h11 tolerance without secondary machining. This guide explains how mills produce cold drawn flat bars, the sizes and grades they come in, and how they compare with hot rolled annealed and pickled (HRAP) flat bars.
Cold Drawing Process
Cold drawn flat bars go through a sequence of controlled, room-temperature operations. Each step reduces the cross-section while keeping the profile straight and true.
- Coating: Workers coat the surface of the hot rolled starting bar with a drawing lubricant. This lubricant film reduces friction between the bar and the die during drawing and protects the surface from scoring.
- Pointing: The mill reduces or points one end of the bar, usually through extrusion or swaging, so it can feed through the die opening and the drawing machine can grip it.
- Cold Drawing: The drawing machine clamps the pointed end and pulls the full length of the bar through the die. The die reduces the cross-sectional area, increases the bar’s length, and sets the final flat profile and tolerance.
- Multi-Pass Drawing: For a large reduction or tight tolerance, operators draw the bar through progressively smaller dies in more than one pass, applying intermediate annealing between passes to restore ductility and relieve work hardening.
- Annealing: The mill applies a solution annealing heat treatment before, between or after drawing passes to soften the material, remove internal stress, and restore the corrosion resistance and mechanical properties the finished grade requires.
- Finishing: Ambica Steels supplies the finished bar in a cold drawn and belt polished condition, with a bright, uniform surface, precise and repeatable dimensions, and improved machinability compared with the hot rolled starting stock.

Strengths
- High precision and close h11 tolerance, well beyond what hot rolling alone can achieve.
- Bright, belt-polished surface finish that often removes the need for further machining.

Limitations / Considerations
- Higher processing cost than HRAP flat bars, since drawing, pointing and intermediate annealing are additional operations.
- Narrower size range: cold drawing generally limits widths to about 100 mm and thicknesses to about 25.4 mm, beyond which HRAP becomes the more practical route.
- Work hardening during drawing can reduce ductility if the material is not correctly annealed between passes.
- Not always necessary — applications that accept a hot rolled finish and looser tolerance can use HRAP flat bars more cost-effectively.
